The Following executed document contains provisions for the organization,
continuance and termination of the historical reenactment organization
to be known as Company G, Thirteenth South Carolina Volunteer Infantry.
I. PURPOSE: The purpose of Company G, Thirteenth South
Carolina
Volunteer Infantry (13th SCV) shall be to provide educational programs
for the public pertaining to the life of an infantry soldier during the
period 1860-1865. This period being properly referred to as the War Between
The States. The programs may also include the ancillary activities of
the civilians during that same historical period when this interpretation
is historically accurate and necessary. The forum for these educational
programs may include, but not be limited to, formal seminars and class
presentations, living history programs, battle reenactments, and memorial
services. Any use of the organizations name, membership and/or common
property in a "for profit" venture is strictly forbidden.
II. MEMBERSHIP: Membership shall be open to any person,
regardless of race, gender, creed, religious affiliation or national origin,
who understands and agrees with the purpose of the organization, desires
to honorably further its goals, and can actively participate without unreasonable
accommodation. The organization shall be nonpolitical, nonsectarian, and
shall show no discrimination in its membership selection as it relates
to race, gender, national origin or physical handicaps. Membership in
the 13th SCV Co. G implies consent to membership in the Palmetto Battalion,
Inc. (Battalion) and agreement to abide by those established by-laws unless
and until that organization no longer retains an eleemosynary status as
specified in the U.S. and State of S.C. tax codes and/or the 13th SCV,
Co. G is separated from the Battalion by a vote of the membership.
A. Sponsorship - An applicant for membership must have a sponsor
(current member in good standing as defined by the Battalion By-laws)
who will act as his steward throughout the applicant's probationary period.
B. Application - A 13th SCV membership application must be completed and
accepted by the Company (Co.) adjutant with the prevailing Palmetto Battalion
dues, if any, paid in full. These monies will be refunded in full in the
event the application is not accepted for membership.
C. Probation - A probation period of not less than six (6) months is
required of all applicants of the 13th SCV. During this period the
applicant must attend a minimum of four (4) previously scheduled events
during which his fitness for membership shall be evaluated. If four events
are not so scheduled then the six month period shall be extended to include
four events. Various attributes including, but not limited to, knowledge
of the Period, ability to assimilate with the membership, willingness
to contribute to the overall good of the Co., ability and demonstrated
skill in Hardee's Light Infantry Tactics and tolerance of minimum physical
stresses will be used to evaluate the candidate. A two-thirds (2/3) majority
vote, by secret ballot, shall determine whether the applicant is accepted.
This vote shall be scheduled at the earliest possible date following the
probation period previously described above. An unsuccessful candidate
shall have the right to petition the Co. for a re-vote following a written
appeal to the Co. Adjutant.
D. Dues - All members in good standing shall be required to pay yearly
dues as set by a vote of the membership. The amount determined shall include
the prevailing yearly Palmetto Battalion, Inc. membership dues. All active
members of the 13th SCV are required to maintain their membership in the
Palmetto Battalion, Inc. The dues will be due to the Company adjutant
by July first (1st) of each year. Any member failing to remit the entire
amount due by this date shall be considered to be in arrears. Failure
to satisfy this obligation within thirty (30) days of the due date shall
cause the member to lose all rights and privileges of a member in good
standing. Failure to satisfy this obligation within sixty (60) days of
the due date shall cause a termination of membership. Company dues shall
be waived for all first year (based on the Battalion fiscal year) members
in lieu of equipment purchases.
E. Termination of Membership - Membership in the 13th SCV is
considered a privilege and as such all members must abide by the certain
rules governing their conduct and safety. The rules and regulations aforementioned
are hereby adopted the Company and are entitled Third (Secession) Company
Rules and Regulations and The Palmetto Battalion Inc. Bylaws, Field Orders
and Safety Regulations. Violations shall be considered to be of one of
two classes: Minor infractions - these may (shall) be related
to personal
conduct, field or safety regulations and will be dealt with by the Company
staff. Major infractions - these will result, in all
likelihood, in the
individuals removal from the 13th SCV and as such must be brought before
the Company general membership for action.
The Company First Sergeant shall determine the severity of the
infraction for all enlisted men. The Company Commander shall determine
same for the Company staff, First Sergeant, and all civilian impressions.
In the event of the infraction resulting in the possible removal of the
offender from the Palmetto Battalion the Battalion Bylaws shall be adhered
to.
F. Definition of Member in Good Standing - A member in good standing shall
be as defined in the Palmetto Battalion by bylaws.
