For
those of you who are new to reenacting or interested in becoming a reenactor,
we are in the process of answering some of the most asked questions at
reenactments.
Isn't
that wool uniform hot?
It's
not as hot as you think. Wool and cotton breathe fairly well. When you
sweat, the sweat builds up in the shirt and inside of the jacket. When
a breeze blows, it cools you down somewhat. On hot days it actually can
be more comfortable than wearing cotton shorts and a t-shirt. For one
thing, you aren't going to get sunburned.
Where
do you get all of your equipment?
Most
events have sutlers that travel to events all over the country and sell
everything you need to participate in this hobby. Some of them also have
web sites where you can purchase items online. Click here
for several links to sutlers.
How
do you decide who get shot?
At
most events, the reenactors decide individually when they want to get
shot or "take a hit." The outcome of the battle is usually determined
beforehand and we generally play along. If someone runs out of cartridges
or gets tired or overheated, he will decided to take a hit. Also, if he
finds a nice shady tree to take a hit under, he will do that so he can
watch the battle. At some big national events everyone draws a slip of
paper that tells them if they get shot and possibly how they die. Sometimes
that doesn't always work out.
