BRIEF OVERVIEW With the secession of South Carolina on December 20, 1860, South Carolina placed a call for troops. In July 1861 men from Spartanburg, Laurens, Newberry, and Lexington districts organized at Camp Lightwoodknot Springs near Columbia and formed the Thirteenth South Carolina Volunteers. Oliver Evans Edwards was voted Colonel of the unit. In the autumn of 1861 they were ordered to the coast where they served until April 1862 when they were ordered to Virginia to serve in the Army of Northern Virginia for the remainder of the war. During that time they were in Maxcy Gregg's Brigade until he was killed at Fredericksburg. Then Samuel McGowan was placed in command of the brigade where the name changed to McGowan's Brigade.
